Abstract

Rafael Ruiz Alonso, El Esgrafiado. Materiales, técnicas y aplicaciones. Corrientes nacionales e internacionales del esgrafiado (I), Segovia, Instituto de la Cultura Tradicional Segoviana Manuel González Herrero / Diputación de Segovia, 2015. This volume is the first book-length output of a research project funded by the Instituto de la Cultura Tradicional Segoviana, and offers a comprehensive study of the history, terminology, materials, and techniques of mural sgraffito from both national and international perspectives, tracing its presence in countries such as Morocco, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Poland, Mexico, and Argentina, among others. The book is organized into four main sections—terminology, technical aspects, processes, and applications—with a closing chapter on the Segovian case and an extensive bibliography, dismantling myths about the possible Italian, Catalan, Andalusian, or North African origins of the technique. The reviewer praises the work's scholarly rigor, highlighting the author's rare combination of art-historical expertise and hands-on technical knowledge.
