About the Journal
Arte y Ciudad. Revista de Investigación publishes articles and bibliographic reviews on art history and theory, visual arts, architecture, urban planning, communication and cultural studies, with special attention to contemporary art in all its manifestations and from any methodological approach, while remaining open to studies of the different historical periods in which the city, cities, and their artistic manifestations have played decisive roles.
The city concerns us all — from thought, from perception, and above all from the heart. Not only what happens in the city, but what the city itself is. From this perspective, which itself embraces the possibility of multiple readings, the idea of this new research journal in the humanities and social sciences emerged. We start from the notion of the city as a complex of social, economic, demographic, artistic-cultural and political relations that unfold in an urban environment. As the meeting point of that dense and plural fabric, the city is both the product and the cause of certain cultural behaviours of a society evolving through its historical development. The city is not only an object of collective use but also the result of the convergence of all the artistic techniques that give rise to an environment — in Giulio Carlo Argan's classical formulation, "all the more vital the richer in artistic values" — a conception of the city as a work of art that seeks beauty precisely through its relationships with the artistic.
Whether approached from art or from the city, our interest is above all in the interaction of the two: a dialogue that this journal seeks to open, welcoming contributions from all areas of knowledge that converge on this shared object.
Arte y Ciudad. Revista de Investigación is published twice a year (April and October) by the Arte y Ciudad Research Group of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and is indexed in the main international databases of humanities and social-sciences journals.
