Abstract

Moreno Arana, José Manuel. El Retablo en Jerez de la Frontera durante el siglo XVIII. Seville: Secretariado de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Sevilla, 2014. This monograph, derived from the author's doctoral dissertation, analyzes altarpiece production in Jerez de la Frontera throughout the eighteenth century, placing it within the broader context of Baroque altarpiece-making in Western Andalusia. The book is structured in three main parts addressing, respectively, the sociological implications of the altarpiece-maker's trade, the material and iconographic aspects of the pieces, and a historical-stylistic survey ranging from the Solomonic model to Neoclassicism, cataloguing works and artists with previously unpublished documentary evidence. The reviewer positively appraises the integrative character and interdisciplinary perspective of the work, which transcends the scope of local art history to offer a detailed and rigorous catalogue of Jerez's altarpiece heritage.
