Abstract

This paper summarizes the study of the acoustic behavior of the "ex convento de San Nicolás de Tolentino" refectory, located in the municipality of Actopan, State of Hidalgo, Mexico. This place is known for its exceptional acoustic, considering it was built in the sixteenth century, a time where there was neither the theoretical knowledge nor the technology to design and measure the facilities acoustic. However, excellent results were achieved in their design so the friars were able to lecture and preach their sacred prayers having a maximum acoustic comfort. It is interesting to observe and analyze the refectory's ceiling, due to its peculiar features, which undeniably help in the sound diffusion within the room. To verify the results, specific acoustic parameters are measured and analyzed, such as "Reverberation Time" (RT), "Early Decay Time" (EDT), "Musical Clarity" (C80), "Definition" (D50), "Centre Time" (Ts), "Speech Transmission Index" (STI) and "Percentage of Articulation Loss of Consonants" (% Alcons).
