Abstract

The contemporary city is renewed and transformed while the ideological context that determines its perception and experimentation is modified. Viennese architecture and art of the decades of transition between the nineteenth and twentieth century worked collectively as a tool for changing the image of the city. Public works and the areas of the arts completed or projected by architect Otto Wagner served as catalysts for urban regeneration process linked to a functional beautification of public space, regarding the city, following the tradition of Camillo Sitte or Lewis Mumford, as container art‐ works. This urban construction materializes the discussion about the role of architec‐ ture as a fine art and technology in the new functions and urban infrastructures.
