Abstract

In 1903 Wilhelm Jensen wrote the short novel Gradiva, a Pompeiian Fancy. Years later, Sigmund Freud analyzed Jensen's novel. Because of this Gradiva became a well known character among psychoanalysts, and subsequently one of the main muses of the surrealist mo vement. Although Gradiva is a figure that has appeared throughout the 20th century, it was in these two cultural milieus where the character of Gradiva together with her symbology became most important. In particular, the work of Salvador Dalí is examined in detail ---the artist that created the largest number of works dedicated to “she who advances splendidly ”.
