The first urban park in Zaragoza: Pignatelli park, history and design

Abstract

This article has focused on the study of the history of the first park constructed inSaragossa, the Pignatelli park, whose original project was designed by the municipal architect, Ricardo Magdalena in 1892. It is analyzed the genesis of the park and its evolution until the last remodeling in 1985 from a multidisciplinary approach stylistic, historical, sociological and geographical aspects. It is possible to state its construction which was marked by the economic interests, the public opinion, the civil collaboration and especially, by the desires to compare Zaragoza with other Spanish and European capitals by means of the introduction of a green public space, symbol of prestige and progress of the contemporary cities. The main objective of this research is to publicize and discuss the issue of the introduction of the first urban parks in the Spanish cities, understood as the architectural and artistic design of the landscape, from this particular example.
