Ascensión Hernández Martínez (coord.), Conservando el pasado, proyectando el futuro. Tendencias en la restauración monumental en el siglo XXI [Preserving the Past, Projecting the Future: Trends in Monumental Restoration in the Twenty-First Century], Zaragoza, Instituto Fernando el Católico, Diputación de Zaragoza, 2016, ISBN: 978-84-99114-19-4. The volume brings together ten contributions by Spanish and Italian specialists who reflect on the current state of monumental restoration, situated in the tension between traditional restoration culture and the new interventionist practices characteristic of postmodernity and the neoliberal context. The authors warn of the risk that contemporary actions on heritage become subordinated to mercantilist, touristic, or urban-image interests, to the detriment of cultural and historical values. The reviewer appraises the work positively as a rigorous and up-to-date intellectual corpus that calls for disciplinary ethics and a coherent method in the face of growing arbitrariness in the field of heritage conservation.
