Abstract

Javier Mosteiro and Francisco Egaña Casariego (Eds.), Iglesias coloniales de El Salvador, Valladolid: Universidad de Valladolid, 2017, ISBN 978-84-8448-048-1. The book recovers the previously unpublished manuscript of Joaquín Vaquero Palacios (1900-1998), compiled in two main phases during 1945 and 1961, which stands as one of the first systematic studies of colonial religious architecture in El Salvador. The work analyses twenty-four churches classified according to their constructive systems, accompanied by sketches, floor-plan drawings, and black-and-white photographs that form a discourse parallel to the text. The reviewer responds very positively to the edition, highlighting the thorough introductory study by Mosteiro and Egaña and the photographic appendix, and underscores the timeliness of the publication in recovering a fragile and largely vanished heritage.
