Abstract

This article explores how cinema has played a crucial role in the perception of urban space and its memory, by analyzing two filmic phenomena: city symphonies of the 1920s and place compilations made in the las twenty years. The former were produced at a time when cinema was thought of as a medium of spectacle and splendor, which both reflected and gave shape to a wonderous faith in the future. On the other hand, contemporary place- compilations offer an approach to film as an archival medium. While these two manifestations are distant in time and product of differing social and cultural circumstances, their comparison can lead to interesting questions regarding the complex relationship between history, memory, urban space, and cinema.
